The trick lies in associating a word with most peculiar and vivid sentence such that whenever you see that word again you can easily recall the sentence and the word meaning. For example let us take

TIPS TO REMEMBER WORDS FOR GMAT/CAT/GRE AND DOWNLOAD IMPORTANT WORDLIST

It's a well known fact the candidate with a large vocabulary is most likely to gain in the exams like GRE,GMAT,CAT. Below we are providing you a beautifully compiled Mnemonic wordlist which is easy to remember and I am also enumerating some of the best ways to remember words as elaborated in my previous articles:

      1. A-E WORDLIST( WORDLIST PART-1)(MNEMONIC TECHNIQUE)
      2. F-J WORDLIST(WORDLIST PART-2)(ASSOCIATION TECHNIQUE)
      3. K-P WORDLIST(WORDLIST PART-3)(INCREASE VOCAB BY WATCHING SITCOMs)

-Alternative Strategy- Split Word Mind Map System

Some words are hard to memorize because they have obscure meanings or are hard to connect to other words .For such words,split-word mind mapping is a great tool. Here's how it works:

1.Break down the sounds of the word, and turn those sounds into a picture .Let's  say that you're trying to learn the word polemic .First, break down its syllables. It sounds like pole and lemon, so imagine a lemon on the end of a pole.(You might break it down differently, for instance ,as pole and mick. That's fine , as long as you turn it into a picture!)

2.Imagine a picture for the meaning of the word .Polemic means " a strong verbal or written attack", as you might visualize someone arguing loudly with a politician at a debate. Try to picture someone you actually know,if possible ,someone with strong opinions.

3.Put the two pictures together into one. See the debater hitting the politician with the lemon on the end of the pole. The crazier the picture, the better!

4.Map your image in your mind and make it comte alive .As you visualize your picture:
    • Give the picture action by making it move like an animated cartoon.
    • Make sure the picture links two things:the sound of the word and the meaning of the word.
    • Make the picture bizarre and illogical so that it's more memorable.
    • Work on exaggerating the picture so that the meaning of the word "pops out".
-Connect New Words to Your Own Experience or Knowledge

To learn a new word ,you must connect it to something you understand.Word meanings aren't isolated facts to memorize.Think about how to use your new words. For instance ,when learning the word enervate (to weaken or decrease in strength or vitality),think about what enervates you( a 2-hour standardized test, perhaps?) or about examples of enervation you read in books .Visualize them and say them out loud:"GRE can be an enervating experience".

In my fourth edition of the  vocabulary sections ,I will tell the best way to learn words.Jackie Chan when entered Hollywood hardly knew  English ,forget about delivering dialogues in English  but yet he was able to grasp and learn the language so fast and so fluent with the right pronunciation.

When asked how was he able to do this in months which actually takes years to become so proficient. The actor revealed that he started learning English watching TV sitcoms and movies in English,in this way he was able to learn more words along with their correct pronunciation and correct context usage .

Moral of the story :Watch and learn ,start watching sitcoms like
-THE BIG BANG THEORY ,HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
    -HOUSE
    -SIMPSONS
    -FRIENDS
etc.. along with the SUBTITLES , enjoy the show but also keep eyes on the subs .I usually recommend BIG BANG THEORY for its a light comedy along with highly articulate sentences forming the backbone of the born which are fun to grasp.

When you are watching sitcoms along with your listening sense ,eyes and mind works  virtually helping words to get embedded in your brain better and longer.

Let us take example of words that I came across watching sitcoms

    1. Doppleganger from how I met your mother,I am not going to tell you the meaning ,try guessing from the snap of the show.
Yes it is look alike two different individual

    2.Intervention:No answer for this one.

3.LETHARGIC : Sitcoms character are now being used to taught foreign languages

    4. (PART-1)DOWNLOAD MUST SOLVE 50 LR/DI QUESTIONS ON LR/DI

DOWNLOAD HOW TO APPROACH AND SOLUTIONS PDF OF 50 MUST SOLVE LR/DI QUESTIONS

Approach and solutions demonstrating how to tackle question of (PART-2) LR DI MUST DO QUESTIONS  are provided at the end of the article in the form of a pdf for download. As promised with you in my previous article , I am going share with you the right strategy that you should adopt while LR/DI section based on the new CAT -2015 pattern .
Straight Gyan :1. Analyze the paper ,approximately there will be 4 set each of LR and DI.If questions are of medium level ,then you have to attempt 3 set each in LR DI to score 99%. So total 6 sets out of 8.Remember there will no clear boundary will be LR/DI so just attempt at least 6 set from overall.

    2. Don't leave complete set ,there are usually equal distribution of easy, difficult and medium level questions in LR/DI sets. For example in a caselet consisting of 4 questions 1 question will be easy,2 will be of medium level and one will be a difficult one .So don't miss out on these easy and medium level questions.

    3.  Always solve time taking questions in the end .Example:

    Question.
In the production department, 50% of the males are post graduates. Which of the following
    statements is correct?
    (1) Except post graduate males, all other groups have the same number of employees.
    (2) Except males who are not post graduates, all other groups have the same number of
    employees.
    (3) Except post graduates females, all other groups have the same number of employees.
    (4) Except females who are not post graduates, all the other groups have the same number of
    employees.
    (5) All of the above groups have the same number of employees.

-In the above example each option is a question in itself which we need check ,so though the question is of 3 mark but still we are solving each option which is a question itself .Better avoid such questions and keep them for last.

    4. Don't get stuck: If you are getting stuck at any question ,better move to next one but keep the calculation and the logic written safe aside ,so that you can return later and start where you left it.So time will be saved and previous time given will also not go waste .

5.In LR it will happen they you may get stuck and can longer proceed ,leave that question immediately when you ran out of logic .

6.STOP GETTING AFRAID ON SEEING HUGE CHUNK OF DATA : Question can be usually easy if heavy data is given in caselet.

7.Use approximation but before using it check whether the options are far apart or close .

If the questions are too close like in the IIFT paper its better to leave it ,then to waste so much time on getting the answer which can also be wrong.

8.Increase your exposure to all type of questions asked in LR/DI to solve the problem faster if a problem based on similar concept appears in the actual exam.

DOWNLOAD 50 MUST DO DI/LR QUESTIONS BASED ON PREVIOUS CAT AND NEW CAT -2015 PATTERN

We are back with some new set of quality questions on LR/DI  .But before that  I am going to discuss with you the correct strategy of attempting questions in LR/DI section. As as cat aspirant you will be aware that the LR/DI will be of a separate section which need to be solved within stipulated time of 60 minutes .i.e. 32 questions in 60 minutes.

The good thing about the new pattern is that you need not worry about individual cutoff ,given 60 minutes you all will definitely cross sectional cutoff. But the negative side is that if you are good in one section and complete that section like verbal before 60 minutes.Still ,you will not be able to use this extra time in other  sections.

I have observed that students usually take more time in solving LR questions and since they cannot make up for this extra time by saving time in other sections this year ,they need to work hard and practice more .Trust me this section will be the game changer .

As predicted quant is expected to be easy this year and verbal a level higher but DI/LR will remain on the higher side , DI itself will be logical based with presence of onscreen calculator.

So make yourself acquainted with every type of questions and the type of strategy you adopt in exam like WHEN TO JUMP TO NEXT SET ,WHAT TYPE QUESTION TO ATTEMPT IN LR/DI ,WHAT QUESTIONS TO SKIP IN PAPERS  read my next article "APPROACH TO ADOPT WHILE SOLVING LR/DI IN CAT ACTUAL PAPER". READ AND DOWNLOAD 50 MUST SOLVE PARAJUMBLES QUESTIONS AND THE CORRECT APPRAOCH TO TACKLE THEM.

Today we are sharing with you an amazing set of Parajumble questions, this compilation is a must for every serious aspirant who want to improve and master parajumbles . Like always ,before letting you kick off your session with these questions I will be providing you with some gyan and approach of solving parajumbles. Yes..yes ,I know that most of you are very well aware of the basic approaches like

    -Mandatory links
    -Pronoun usage
    -Abbreviation use
    -Connectors
    -Chronological order
    -General specific rule.
    -Starting and closing sentence etc

These can be read from my old articles or from other sites but what we are going to discuss today is the essence as well as the root of these rules. For solving parajumbles I always make use of  just one single rule that is "The flow of thoughts and the tone should be same for sentences to belong to the same group" .By using this ,I usually categorise the given 5 sentences into 2-3 groups and later connect them depending on the idea they talk about. Let us take an example:

    A. The revolution began as an attack on despotism

    B. Already by 1762 Rousseau was implying in his "Social Contract"that there was no meaningful difference between the authority of a despot and that of a monarch.

    C. As usual, regular usage soon diluted the original rigor of the expression's meaning.

    D. Montesquieu has defined its spirit as "The rule of one ,according to no law".

    E. Obeying no law, authority was arbitrary and its animating spirit was fear.

    a. AEDCB    b. ABDCE.    c. ADECB    d. ADEBC

    Solving in parts:

    • As we all can see that statement A talks about revolution and sentence D talks about 'its spirit' where it refers to revolution. So,AB form a pair ,now B ends with no law ,so chances are high that the next line will elaborate further on this which we can see in the statement E .Therefore,ADE is our pair.
    • Remaining statement B and C forms one pair because both talks about the expression meaning and its dilution ,so C comes before B ,hence , CB
    • So our overall answer is b. ADECB ,as its obvious from option as well as style that A is the starting  sentence .
How to solve Odd One Out parajumbles will be discussed in our next article for the approach to solve them differs significantly.Till then download this excellent parajumbles question set and start solving:

(Part-1) Download FACT ,INFERENCE AND JUDGEMENT QUESTION SET ALONG WITH THE RIGHT APPROACH TO TACKLE THEM

As we all know IIM-A will be conducting this year CAT paper ,chances are high that it will reintroduce FIJ question as it did in the year 2006.So a special importance need to be given to this topic.Besides giving question set to download at the end of the article ,I will also be sharing with you the right approach to solve FIJs' with few important examples and difference between inference and judgement which can be quite confusing for many students.

First let us see each of these in little detail(I am not going to  delve into their predefined definition but just simple tricks on how to recognize them):

FACT: -It can be some stastical data without conclusion drawn from it otherwise it ll be a inference.

    • The government has been supplying free drugs since 2004, and 35000 have benefited up to now - though the size of the affected population is 150 times this number.

-Anyone else’s opinion stated by the author is a fact. Whereas the personal opinion will become a judgement.

    -Universal truth  and habits.

    • Water boils at 100 degrees Celcius.
-It is different from inference for it state without driving conclusion.
-Does not from person to person
-And it is non-predictive in nature

INFERENCE: -It's a conclusion that you draw from the stated facts and data. But remember one important point that it has to be mild in tone .Adverb and adjective if present should be mild in tone and verifiable like

    •  Given the poor quality of service in the public sector, the HIV/AIDS affected should be switching to private initiatives that supply anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs) at a low cost.

"Poor quality" has a very strong tone and therefore,it cannot be categorised as inference ,on the contrary,it is a judgement."

JUDGEMENT: -It can be an opinion drawn from facts. But it has a strong tone attached to it.

    •  Extensive disarmament is the only insurance for our future; imagine the amount of resources that can be released and redeployed.
    •  Inequitable distribution of all kinds of resources is certainly one of the strongest and most sinister sources of conflict.
Extensive ,certainly, strongest, most all such words qualify the above statements as judgements.

-Many times it may happen that the statement may conatin no facts but just a conclusion then it is definitely a judgement.
    •  When this happens, each moment becomes a celebration of you; there is a rush of energy that comes with feeling completely immersed in doing what you love most.
-Quantities that cannot be measured like happy, joy etc,
    •  This is the stuff that joyful living is made of- identifying your calling and committing yourself wholeheartedly to it.
As I have already exceeded my word limit, difference between inference and judgement will be explained in my next article .Till then ,you can download pagalguy question set for FIJs with the right approach to solve them.
